BASS CHAPEL
METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, SOUTH (MECS)
Founded 1867 as Lake Academy MECS by William Capers Bass, D.D. (1831-1894). Rebuilt in 1879 and named Bass Chapel to Honor Dr. Bass, who preached at this church once a month until his death in 1894. Minister 42 years, served Damascus 35 years, First Street, Doles, Liberty, Founded Swift Creek MECS. Professor of Natural Science, 15 years. President of Wesleyan College, 20 yehars. Nurtured and Educated hundreds of young women who became leaders, teachers, musicians, and missionaries. A most beloved man by family, colleagues, faculty, students, and congregations. His legacy still lives!
Site of Lake Academy, deeded August 2, 1826 by Thomas and Lurany Lundy for a "School of Higher Education and House of Divine Worship" in Monroe Co., later Bibb. Little Doubt Academy used by circuit riders of 1823 Monroe Mssion. Sunday School organzed in 1847 on site by Rev. W.r. Branham.
